The North 40 Outfitters Mutton Bustin’ Championship
It’s not all about big tough cowboys riding bulls and broncs… some of the fiercest competitors are the youngsters that participate in one of the rodeo’s most beloved traditions, Mutton Busting.
To be a mutton buster, kids have to be between the ages of 4-6 and 70 lbs. or less. Parents must sign a waiver to let their children participate and all kids wear protective helmets and vests provided by the rodeo committee.
Just like the regular rodeo, the sheep – with names like “Woolly Booger” and “Baaaaad to the Bone” – are loaded into a chute. Kids straddle the sheep and when the gate is opened, the kids try to hang on as long as they can… but it’s not as easy as it sounds!
Every mutton buster at the North 40 Outfitters Mutton Bustin championship receives a tee shirt, a backpack full of goodies, and the top three from each night come back for the Championship round on Saturday night. Up for grabs: a beautiful Montana Silversmiths trophy belt buckle, just like the cowboys wear, and of course… fame and recognition!
HOW TO GET SIGNED UP:
Visit North 40 Outfitters between July 1st and before NOON on July 22nd.
Kids must be between 4-6 years of age and weigh no more than 70 lbs.
Inquire with a cashier to get paperwork taken care of. Kids AND a parent must be present to get signed up. All kids will have their photo taken for the day sheet, in the event they are chosen. Photos are the property of Big Sky Pro Rodeo.
A LIVE, random drawing will be held at NOON on July 22nd to determine the 10 mutton busters for each of the first 3 nights of the Big Sky Pro Rodeo, August 2-4. Kids do not have to be present in order to be drawn.
Mutton Busters will each receive rodeo gate admission for themselves and a parent to the performance they are entered for.
